Alba Iulia, a city with great resonance in the history of the Romanian people, has reached it’s greatness mostly because of the geographical position, the natural point of transition and the crossroads which linked to it the surrounding area filled with rich organic deposits of precious metals, salt and famous vineyards. Traffic routes meet here in Transylvania and were used to communicate with the major economic centers, which boosted the demographic development, urban and economic.
Here had place major events in the history of the Alba Iulia people which boasts pride being considered the spiritual capital of Romania.
Between 1541 and 1711 the city was, with some interruptions, the main seat of Transylvania princes and thus the political capital of Transylvania. For a short period of time, starting with the recognition as a sovereign prince of Sigismund Báthory of Moldova and the Romanian Country (1595), was also the capital of these countries, the political project being continued by Michael the Brave.
Alba Iulia was thus the first capital of the three Romanian provinces. At the Alba Iulia Grand National Assembly held on 1 December 1918, meeting which led to the unification of Transylvania and Banat with the Kingdom of Romania. In 1922 took place in Alba Iulia the official ceremony of coronation of the kings of Greater Romania, Ferdinand I and Maria, moment which sanctioned the historical importance and role of the historical capital city.
