Between 1541 and 1711 the city was, with some interruptions, the main seat of Transylvania princes and thus the political capital of Transylvania. For a short period of time, starting with the recognition as a sovereign prince of Sigismund Báthory of Moldova and the Romanian Country (1595), was also the capital of these countries, the political project being continued by Michael the Brave.
Alba Iulia was thus the first capital of the three Romanian provinces. At the Alba Iulia Grand National Assembly held on 1 December 1918, meeting which led to the unification of Transylvania and Banat with the Kingdom of Romania. In 1922 took place in Alba Iulia the official ceremony of coronation of the kings of Greater Romania, Ferdinand I and Maria, moment which sanctioned the historical importance and role of the historical capital city.
